Not only is the island rich in geographical and ecological resources, but it also boasts countless beautiful coastlines and reefs. If you haven&#039;t been to Xiaoliuqiu yet and don&#039;t know how to plan your trip, just read this guide to transportation, attractions, and food in Xiaoliuqiu, and you&#039;re guaranteed to have a wonderful time! Xiaoliuqiu is the closest island to Taiwan proper, located southwest of Taiwan, and is Taiwan&#039;s only coral island, one of only seven coral islands in the world. This small island of only 6.8 square kilometers has a coastline that stretches for 12 kilometers.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<section>\n<h2>Departing from Donggang<\/h2>\n<p>After taking the train to Kaohsiung Railway Station, transfer to a bus to Donggang Station, then walk for about 10 minutes to Donggang Wharf. You can choose to take a public or privately owned boat, with a sailing time of 25 to 40 minutes. The boats stop at Dafu Fishing Port and Baishawei Port in Xiaoliuqiu.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Departing from Kaohsiung<\/h2>\n<p>Starting in July 2017, you can take a free shuttle bus from Kaohsiung MRT Xiaogang Station or take the Kaohsiung Bus Red 2A to Fengbi Port Pier, and then transfer to a ferry to Xiaoliuqiu. There is only one round trip per day, and the sailing time is 40 minutes. Travelers who are too lazy to go to Donggang may want to consider this route!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Swimming with abundant marine life and sea turtles<\/h2>\n<p>Xiaoliuqiu is so popular in Taiwan, becoming a vacation destination for locals. This small place has become famous throughout Taiwan because of the presence of a group of sea turtles in the sea and the blue-finger starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea hares, and anemone shrimp in the intertidal zone. The Central Mountain Range of Taiwan protects Xiaoliuqiu all year round, blocking the northeast winds, so Xiaoliuqiu has a warm and pleasant climate all year round. You can swim up close with sea turtles on the shore 365 days a year, put on rubber shoes and take an eco-tour in the intertidal zone to learn about marine life, or ride a bicycle around the island to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the sunset.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travelmama.com.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/nnvowrhg860.webp\" alt=\"\u5c0f\u7409\u7403\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelmama.com.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/nnvowrhg860.webp 800w, https:\/\/travelmama.com.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/nnvowrhg860-18x10.webp 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<section>\n<h2>The 18-kilometer island ring road passes through several scenic spots.<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Bicycles or electric bicycles can be rented on sections of the highway where there are uphill and downhill sections.<\/h2>\n<p>The island&#039;s ring road is generally flat with asphalt surfaces, making it ideal for cycling. Although the ring road is flat, some sections have inclines and declines. The Pingtung Cycling and Walking Network in Taiwan compares Xiaoliuqiu&#039;s cycling routes to other Pingtung routes, classifying it as a 2-star route (out of 3 stars), meaning there are occasional hills and slopes. If you don&#039;t want to struggle uphill in the sweltering 30+ degree summer heat, it&#039;s recommended to rent an electric bicycle equipped with a motor.<\/p>\n<p>There are many bike rental shops on the island, offering both regular and electric bicycles. A two-day, one-night rental costs around NT$300. No driver&#039;s license is required, making it perfect for Hong Kong locals. Electric bicycles are very easy to operate, basically the same as regular bicycles. On flat ground, you can pedal as usual. When going uphill and wanting to avoid strain, you can turn the handbrake to activate the motor, automatically accelerating the bike and saving a lot of pedal effort. However, you still need to pedal a few times to assist with uphill acceleration. Electric bicycles generally only reach a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour, so it&#039;s recommended to slow down, riding slowly at around 10-20 kilometers per hour, enjoying the scenery and the salty air.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the steepest uphill section is from the tourist pier to the Beauty Cave. To minimize uphill sections when circling the island, the trick is to start clockwise from the tourist pier, take a photo at the most famous coral rock in Xiaoliuqiu, &quot;Vase Rock,&quot; then walk along the Thick Rock Reef, and then visit the Sunset Pavilion, Black Ghost Cave, and Beauty Cave on the west side. Finally, return to the tourist pier. This can easily circle the island in about an hour.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Thick rock reefs, &quot;secret beach&quot; with crystal-clear water.<\/h2>\n<p>When passing through the Houshi Reefs, remember to look out for an unnamed &quot;Secret Beach&quot;. A long time ago, local residents dug a large ditch to facilitate fishermen towing their small sampans ashore. After it was abandoned, it became this secret beach. Most of the beaches in Xiaoliuqiu are coral reef beaches, so the sand is not very fine, but the water is definitely clear, and it is a transparent blue like that of Listerine.<\/p>\n<p>There is another &quot;secret pool&quot; near the only CPC gas station in Xiaoliuqiu. Locals treat it as their private secret pool, and some diving trips use this &quot;secret pool&quot; as their starting point for the sea. You can imagine how clear the sea is in this area.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Electric bike rentals usually include a charging plug, and you can usually charge it using the electrical outlets in guesthouses. After a day of riding, you can charge it overnight at the guesthouse; it should be enough for a full day of riding.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2>Must-do activities in Xiaoliuqiu: # Night Visit to Xiaoliuqiu<\/h2>\n<p>When you travel to Xiaoliuqiu, you should not only play during the day, but also at night. There are not only stars in the sky, but also a variety of rich ecosystems waiting for you to explore. Some creatures or scenery can only be seen at night. For example, the chessboard-shaped flowers that drift on the sea only bloom for two months each year, and at night. The white stamens that spread out are as cute as little night lights.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the intertidal zone is also very lively at night, where you can see crabs, starfish, sea urchins and other creatures that are quite different from those during the day.
