Basco, located in the northernmost part of the Philippines and its smallest province, is entirely situated on the Batanes Islands, 162 kilometers south of Luzon and approximately 75 kilometers south of Taiwan. Three of its islands are inhabited. Basco is the provincial capital of Batanes Province, located on Batanes Island, the second largest island in the archipelago, with a population of approximately 7,907, mostly Malays. The entire region is surrounded by the Bashi Channel. The island has a meteorological observatory and a domestic airport, Basco Airport, with flights to and from Manila. Asian Spirit operates approximately four flights per week between Manila and Basco, with a flight time of about 70 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The mountainous Batanes Islands, with their majestic mountains and rolling hills, resemble the Scottish Highlands of the Philippines. Strong winds howl through the forests, earning the islands the nickname "Land of the Winds." The dry season is from April to June, while July to September is typhoon season. The best time to visit is from November to February. The Batanes were under Spanish rule from 1788, adopting Western clothing and Catholicism. In 1899, the United States took control of the islands from Spain, introducing public schools and reforming local infrastructure. The Philippine government has designated it a land and marine protected area, renowned for its marine ecology, natural beauty, and friendly residents.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The main islands include Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat. Catholic churches are the main hubs in the island's towns, most of which are Baroque buildings dating back over 200 years. Mount Iraya on Batan, at 1009 meters, is the island's second highest peak, boasting rich flora and fauna. It is also a dormant volcano, ideal for hiking, and Basco Airport is located at its foot. Diura, a small fishing village facing the Pacific Ocean, is where local fishermen perform the Kapayvanuvanua ceremony, signifying the start of the fishing season. The Batan Islands Provincial Government maintains traditional architecture, offering accommodations for tourists and providing a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern cities.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
