Our story began in 2015
We started Travel Mama in Hong Kong in 2015.
There was no grand vision at the beginning, and certainly no plan to turn a travel agency into a big brand. We simply wanted to see whether we could run a business our own way, creating the kind of travel experiences we believed were worth offering.
Running a travel agency can be a curious business. Travel itself is full of enjoyment, but putting a trip together involves a long list of fiddly details. Hotels, transport, routes, timings, suppliers — any one of them can shape how a journey turns out.
Over time, we discovered that we had an almost stubborn fascination with those details.
So we kept going. And so did Travel Mama.

OTA at our own pace
We have always known there are travel agencies bigger than Travel Mama, better known, and with a wider range of trips.
We have never been especially interested in competing for the sake of it, or chasing people day after day for a booking.
Some might call our approach laid-back. We think that is a fair description. After all, everyone wants something different from a trip. The people we are a good fit for will appreciate how we work; everyone else is free to choose an agency that suits them better.
We are a small team, and there is only so much we can give our full attention to. Rather than trying to do everything, we would rather spend our time on the things we really want to do well.
As for whether we need to win every booking?
Sometimes, letting one go makes life easier for everyone.

Over a decade on, still small
Running a travel agency involves far more behind-the-scenes work than most people imagine.
Some days, we spend well over ten hours researching itineraries, improving the website, fine-tuning systems, or dealing with things our customers will never even hear about.
Some of that work goes unnoticed when it is done well. When it is not, someone usually notices.
When it comes to work-life balance, we are probably not the people to ask for advice.
Still, after all these years, what makes us happiest is that we have been able to build a company with a personality of its own, on our own terms.
Travel Mama may never become a household name. We are quite comfortable with that.
