DAY 2 · Tianchi (Heavenly Lake)
Set off from Urumqi and take the scenic-area shuttle into Tianchi (Heavenly Lake). In winter the frozen lake, mountains and spruce forests rise in layer upon layer; the area you can actually visit depends on the day's weather and the scenic area's arrangements.
DAY 4 · Yining
After two visits to Sayram Lake, head to Yining and slow down on Liuxing Street, taking in the neighbourhood's architecture and city life. This stop brings a different kind of Northern Xinjiang winter atmosphere beyond the lakeside scenery.
DAY 6–7 · Zhaosu
Visit the area around Zhaosu's Jade Lake, wetland and Tianma (Heavenly Horse) Culture Park, and take in the wide-open snowfields. Horse herds and related activities depend on the season, weather and operating arrangements, and sightings are not guaranteed.
Enjoy the lakeshore and the scenery around the lake over two days. The ice patterns and colours that are the biggest draw of a Sayram Lake blue ice tour depend on temperature, freezing conditions and weather, and may not be visible on every trip.
Visit Kurdening's snow-covered spruce forest, Swan Spring Wetland and Zhaosu Wetland for a winter landscape quite different from the lake area.
Second-class intercity train seats are arranged from Urumqi to Jinghe and from Yining back to Urumqi; actual train services are subject to ticketing and the confirmed itinerary.
Fly to Urumqi on the reference flight, China Southern Airlines CZ604 (departs Hong Kong 16:55, arrives Urumqi 22:25). On arrival, transfer to the hotel to rest and get ready for your Northern Xinjiang winter journey.
