In modern society, traditional face-to-face communication is gradually being replaced by email and instant messaging tools. This change has a profound impact on interpersonal relationships and social interactions. This article explores the potential impact of this shift on individuals and society, and reflects on how to maintain genuine interpersonal connections amidst such rapidly changing communication methods.

Email communication

Speaking less in meetings is fine; it even gives the impression of calm contemplation. This approach not only allows me to listen more deeply to others' opinions but also gives me the opportunity to organize my thoughts and consider the weight of each word. Email is sufficient for communicating with colleagues; less talking means more doing. The precision of written communication and the convenience of recording significantly improve work efficiency. However, sometimes I still miss the nonverbal cues I can instantly perceive in face-to-face interactions, such as a colleague's hesitation or a trusting smile. When contacting friends, I already send numerous emails. Adding WhatsApp, with its combination of text and images, might make spoken communication less engaging. While the richness of multimedia information is certainly appealing, sometimes these fast communication tools lack the warmth of human voices and the spontaneous emotional exchange.

The Future of Language and Technology

It's disheartening to realize that such a vital element of life as speaking can be so easily replaced by other forms of communication. Direct human interaction, the rich emotions conveyed through eye contact and body language, seems to be fading. The thought of a future where technology can eliminate the need for speaking sends a chill down my spine. What kind of world would that be? A world dominated by data and screens, where people might be more efficient, but wouldn't the reduction in genuine human contact and emotional exchange make us more lonely? Fortunately, I'm still part of this generation. Hong Kong remains one of the noisiest cities in the world, and people on the streets are still chattering away. This calmed me down. It offered a small comfort; at least amidst the noise, real human voices haven't completely disappeared.

Let's meet and talk

Tomorrow, I must meet up with a friend and have a truly enjoyable time. Sitting face-to-face, sharing the little things in each other's lives, feeling the joy and sorrow in each other's voices—that's something no technology can completely replace.

💡 Actually, the happiest thing in life is planning the next exciting and in-depth journey.
