1. EU Schengen Area: Latest Developments in the EES Entry and Exit System and ETIAS

The EU has implemented two core systems for non-EU/visa-free travelers (including holders of Hong Kong SAR passports and BNO passports):

• EES (Entry/Exit System):Completely replacing traditional passport stamps. When travelers enter the Schengen Area for the first time, they must undergo facial scanning and fingerprint collection at self-service kiosks or counters. The system will automatically record the entry and exit dates and the length of stay.
• ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System):For electronic travel permits for visa-free travelers, after implementation, travelers must complete the online application and payment through the official website or app before departure, and can only board the plane and enter the country after approval.

*A reminder: It takes time to queue for biometric data collection at customs. When arriving at your first stop in Europe, it is recommended to allow sufficient time for transfers or customs clearance.

2. Entry into the UK: Full Implementation of the UK ETA (Electronic Travel Tag).

Travellers traveling to or transiting through the UK under the visa-free policy must be aware that the UK has fully implemented the visa-free policy. ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) Regulation:

• Applicants:All eligible travelers eligible for visa-free entry into the UK (including holders of Hong Kong SAR passports, etc.; BNO passport holders should check the latest UK official exemption/entry category)
• Costs and validity period:The fee is £10, and approval is usually granted within 3 working days after application. The validity period is 2 years (or until the passport expires), during which multiple entries are permitted.
• Notice:You must complete the application process on the official UK ETA App or website before departure. You will not be allowed to board the plane without a valid ETA.

3. Venice 2026 Visitor Daytime Access Fee

Venice charges an entrance fee for day-trip visitors who do not stay overnight in order to control crowds during peak season.

Charging period:Peak hours are from 08:30 to 16:00 daily on designated dates.

Fee schedule and appointment system:

• Early bird discounts:Reservations must be made at least 4 days prior to the entry date. The fee is [amount missing]. €5.00.
• Temporary appointment fee:Bookings made within 3 days of entry will incur an additional fee. €10.00.
• Official appointment registration platform:Venice official entry fee registration system (cda.ve.it)

Guests staying at the Venice Hotel (exempt from payment but registration required):

All travelers staying overnight at designated legal hotels/guesthouses in Venice,No city entry fee required,butAn exemption must be declared in advance through the official system.Obtain a QR code to prove your ticket when it is checked.

Special note for tour groups and chartered vehicles:

• No stay in Venice city center:The organizer or team leader must register the entire list of participants and make payment in advance through the system.
• Already checked into Venice city center:You must enter your check-in voucher and the names of all guests on the "Apply for Exemption" page to obtain an exemption certificate.

Thoughtful checklist before departure

• ✅ Ensure your passport is valid for at least 3 months (6 months or more is recommended) on the day you leave the Schengen Area.
• ✅ If traveling to the UK, please complete the UK ETA 1 to 2 weeks in advance of your departure.
• ✅ When crossing the Schengen Area border, prepare your return flight ticket, hotel reservation, and proof of sufficient funds to cooperate with the new EES random inspection procedure.
• ✅ If you're interested in a day trip to Venice's Old Town, register online 4 days in advance to enjoy a €5 discount; if you've booked accommodation in the city, remember to use the Exempt QR Code.
