Yonaguni Island, the westernmost of the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyu Islands, is Japan's westernmost island, located off the northeast coast of Taiwan, approximately 111 kilometers away. On clear days, the mountains of Taiwan can be seen in the distance. The entire island belongs to Yonaguni Town, Yaeyama District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. In 1985, large, cut stone building remains were discovered on the seabed around Yonaguni Island, bringing the island fame. The island is approximately 12 kilometers long from east to west and 4 kilometers long from north to south, with a coastline of 27.49 kilometers and an area of 28.88 square kilometers. Forests and wastelands cover 16.74 square kilometers. The island's terrain is mostly mountainous and valley-based, with plateaus and wetlands. Mount Urabu, at 231.3 meters above sea level, is the highest point on the island, located in the central-eastern part. The island has abundant freshwater resources, with ponds and wetlands to the west of Mount Kubura. In addition, the island is home to a large, non-venomous snake, reaching up to 2 meters in length, commonly found in the plains and wetlands.
