Taiwan Cherry Blossoms: While the world is busy planning its trips, are you regretting missing this annual spectacle because you can't take time off work? Don't despair! Taiwan, the "treasure island" near Hong Kong, also boasts cherry blossoms. Its cherry blossom season is later than in Japan and South Korea. Here are some great places to see cherry blossoms in Taiwan. Fushou Mountain experiences four distinct seasons: cherry blossoms, pear blossoms, peach blossoms, and apple blossoms in spring; golden cat's ear chrysanthemums in summer; peaches, pears, and apples bearing fruit in autumn, and maple leaves turning red; and plum blossoms and snow in winter—each season offers a different landscape.

Fushoushan Farm has several cherry blossom spots. Besides the cherry blossom groves next to the tea plantation and Yuanyang Lake, the cherry blossoms at Songlu attract many locals from Taiwan every year. Songlu is located at the entrance of Fushoushan and was the residence of former Taiwanese President Chiang Ching-kuo. It is named after the lush pine forests around it. With its red-tiled wooden houses, winding paths, and red-brick chimneys, it resembles a Japanese garden. It has now been converted into VIP rooms and is open to tourists.

To get a good photo, at 7 a.m., camera ready.
To capture stunning photos of Taiwan's cherry blossoms, timing is crucial. Go during the day with the best sunlight and the fewest crowds to seize the perfect moment. At 7 AM, a row of camera tripods already lined up in front of Songlu Cottage. Professional photographers and photography enthusiasts alike awaited the first rays of sunlight illuminating the red leaves. The atmosphere was solemn; almost no one dared approach the cottage. Everyone was focused, hoping to capture the perfect shot without obstructions. At 8 AM, the tour bus arrived, and a throng of tourists surged forth. At that moment, I finally understood why Manager Luo of the farm had reminded us to arrive at Songlu Cottage promptly at 7 AM to photograph the autumn leaves. The sunlight just beginning to reach Songlu Cottage resulted in particularly soft colors for the leaves. Sunlight streamed through the red leaves from the rooftops into the quaint Japanese garden, creating a vibrant interplay of green, yellow, orange, and red foliage. Compared to Japan and Korea, Fushoushan's autumn leaves might not be as abundant. Taiwan, located in the subtropics, already boasts a rare abundance of autumn foliage.
Not far from Songlu, Yuanyang Lake is another spot for viewing autumn foliage. While the red leaves at Yuanyang Lake aren't as concentrated as at Songlu, it boasts a wider variety of maple species, including purple maple, green maple, and yellow maple. With its small bridges and flowing water, you can stroll along the lakeside path or picnic on the vast grassland, admiring the pristine white calla lilies. A tip: the degree of reddening of the maple leaves is affected by the weather and temperature differences. When there's a significant difference between day and night temperatures, the red leaves will be more vibrant. Fushoushan Farm's fan page provides annual forecasts of the autumn foliage; those interested should check it out. Campsites and rooms are in high demand during the autumn foliage season, often selling out instantly (for room bookings, refer to <Pack a Few Shirts for Camping in Taiwan - Taiwan Camping Preparation>). If you can't book a room, the farm also offers a one-day entrance ticket, but the journey is more convenient, so a 3-day, 2-night trip is recommended.
