Matsu Blue Tears: It's hard to believe without seeing it in person. Encountering a real-life version in Matsu.Life of PiThe Blue Tears of Matsu is a spectacular blue sea phenomenon. Featured on NASA's website and selected by CNN as one of the world's wonders, this luminous spectacle appears annually between spring and summer on Matsu, one of Taiwan's outlying islands.

Fu Ge, owner of the Matsu 1234 Youth Hostel and an expert on blue tears, explained that "blue tears" was the name chosen by a poll conducted several years ago in Matsu for this phenomenon that glows at night over the sea. There are roughly three types of blue tears:

Noctiluca scintillans: It glows naturally due to the influence of tides and waves, sparkling as the waves crash against it.
Ostracods: bioluminescent planktonic organisms, often referred to as "stardust" when stepped on.
Jellyfish: They emit light after consuming bioluminescent plankton.

How to get to Matsu

Method 1) Mini Three Links (Hong Kong → Fuzhou → Matsu)

Hong Kong residents can fly to Fuzhou and then transfer to a ferry from Mawei or Huangqi Wharf to Matsu. The ferry journey and schedule are as follows:

Fuzhou Mawei Wharf to Matsu Nangan: 90-minute ferry journey, one-way fare NT$$1300.
Lianjiang Huangqi Wharf to Matsu Beigan: 30-minute ferry ride, one-way fare NT$$675.
